Mads About Town

True Blue

I’ve had a rather blue February. No, I haven’t been hit by a seasonable bout of SAD, but a plethora of blue hues. That’s right: this season, blue is back on the beauty radar. In the name of experimentation I took the concept of a blue Valentines very literally and applied a slick of Butter’s SS12 ‘Knackered’ polish and a lick of Nars’s Blue Bayou Eyeliner Stylo on my eyes. We had a wonderful evening together.

Now, you mustn’t think I am suggesting a frosted-pale blue 70’s look – oh no, ladies. There are a few ways to interpret this look and the new blue can be worn two ways facially – it is a subtle under-eye shadow a la Eva, or an electric pop like Alicia. Think of it as a little flash to light up a feature, not an ABBA style revival.

The new blue is all over the A-listers like a rash and you will be hard pressed to find a bigname not sporting a little of it in the modern way. I know, I know, sometimes working a celebrity look is a tricky customer for those of us without a make-up artist to hand but, trust me, this is one look in which you can really win in the beauty and fashion stakes, and here’s how:

Try Shu Uemura’s Me Soft Blue shadow for Eva’s look or, to make an impact, Laura Mercier’s Baked Eye Colour in Lagoon (only use this on either the upper or lower lash line for best effect). For another high-octane look try Shu Uemura’s False Eyelashes in Radiant Blue, although if you are donning these remember to keep the rest of your make up pared down (and these will work best on brown-eyes).

Alternatively, if you want to don blue as a daily staple, go for blue nails. Ubiquitous on the well-polished, blue nails can be a zing to brighten up an otherwise lacklustre ensemble, or an unconventional take on classic. For the former, try Yves Saint Laurent’s Utopian Turquoise or OPI’s No Room for the Blues – both will light up your look. If you want a daily dose of blue try Chanel’s Les Jeans de Chanel – three shades all perfect for day to night wear.

If Beyonce’s daughter Blue Ivy’s name is a barometer for future cool it seems we will all be seeing blue for some time. You read it here first.
